Building a new home or remodeling your home?

Classic Interiors, Harrisburg, PA, opened its 46,000 sq. ft. Design Center in November 2007.  Our Design Center is the only one of its kind in Central Pennsylvania.  The reason for the Classic Interiors Design Center is simple:  we love what we do.  And whenever you dedicate yourself to the pursuit of passion, it shows.  Our passion for creating the ideal home for you shows in every decision we help you make.

When most people consider building a new home or undertaking a remodeling project the prospect of making unlimited decisions seems overwhelming.  Having spent almost 28 years assisting clients through the decision-making process we have observed the procedure as a process of elimination.

As we start the project there is a wide-open palette of choices.  Since floor covering is one of the most important areas of the interior décor, we usually recommend selecting floor covering as a starting point.  (See illustration)

Not only is the floor covering selection important but since it will be one of the single largest surfaces representing color in a room or home; and since it is usually one of the least frequently changed areas of the home, it makes good sense to begin here.  This then gives us a good base to build the rest of the “Pyramid.”

Now that the floor covering has been selected we have established much of the personality of the home regarding color and texture.  As we proceed to the second level of the pyramid process we can eliminate many of the myriad of choices out there simply because of the previously established floorcovering selections.  At this level it us usually a good idea to finalize cabinetry, countertop, and plumbing selection.  It is also generally a good idea to have these selections made early since many of these items require considerable lead-time.

Third on the “way to the top” is the ever-important selection of wall surfaces; be they paint or wallpaper or a combination of the two.  There are few media that will more reflect a homeowner’s personality or individual taste.  Keep in mind, that due to our earlier selections this area need not be all that overwhelming because we have narrowed the field considerably.  This is an area where I believe one can have lots of fun and express individual personality for the home.

The last two steps up the Pyramid can almost be done together although usually window treatment selections will take a precedent over furniture selection, because as is the case in most new homes or remodel jobs, the client will have a great deal of existing furnishings already.  The window dressings can be the “crowning glory” of any new home.  Careful consideration should be made here regarding the functional side of the window treatment, i.e. privacy, light control, as well as the decorative aspect.  It is also a nice reward to add a piece or so of new furniture, at least, when finishing a new project.

While this pyramid discussion might seem to oversimplify the process and while everyone’s requirements and experiences will vary, we believe this basic outline should be helpful in knowing where to begin the process.  Just as a pyramid has a good foundation leading to the ultimate pinnacle, a sound base in making media choices for a home can lead to the pinnacle of “everyone’s home being their castle.”  Above all, this approach should make the job easier and fun!

Hardwood

Classic InteriorsDesign Center holds an array of fine hardwood flooring options from such companies as BR-111 Exotic Hardwood Flooring, Eterna Prefinished Wood Flooring, Mercier Wood Flooring, Hartco Quality Wood Flooring, and Shaw Industries.  Most of the hardwood manufacturers the Design Center boast a 14 to 35 year warranty on their finishes (based on the product line).

Prefinished hardwood flooring offers maintenance that is as easy as 1-2-3

  1. Sweep, vacuum, or dust mop
  2. Clean spills with a damp cloth
  3. Maintain with a leading brand of prefinished hardwood floor cleaner (follow directions on bottle)

We are proud to represent many hardwood companies that are committed to the preservation of our forestlands.  Through reforestation and rational timber harvesting, the health and continuity of this most valuable resource will be passed along to future generations.

Hardwood selections from Shaw Industries from Exotic hardwoods to bamboo flooring are also offered at Classic Interiors, Harrisburg, PA.

The Design Center also offers engineered wood flooring that offers superior resistance to warping caused by moisture.  Glued, stapled, or nailed, it can be installed on virtually any surface, including concrete slabs.

The language of hardwoods:

Square edges.  A square edged means that there are no grooves in the floor.  Planks or strips blend together, creating a focus on the overall floor rather then the individual boards.

Beveled edges.  When laid side by side, the angled edges of the beveled planks form grooves that seemingly outline each individual board.  This effect is created when the edge of the board is milled at a slight angle.

Micro-beveled or eased edges.  The edges of each board are slightly angled during the milling process, making the outline effect around each individual board less pronounced than a beveled edge, but still apparent.

Factory-finish floors.  Save time and headaches by purchasing wood that has been prefinished during the manufacturing process.  This eliminates on-site sanding and staining.  Perhaps most importantly, you also get a consistent finish quality with every floor.

Strip flooring.  Strip flooring is 2 ¼” wide.  It creates a linear effect in a room and promotes the illusion of having a larger space.  This type of flooring looks great in any décor.

Plank flooring.  Perfect for capturing a more casual style.  Plank flooring varies in width from 3” to 7”.

Floating wood floors.  Manufactured in large, wide, pre-assembled wood panels that make installation fast and easy.  The individual boards actually “float” above the subfloor with no direct attachment.

Trim and moldings.  The finishing touches for your hardwood installation, prefinished trim and moldings are precisely milled for an accurate fit.
